Three Caldwell children who police say weren’t returned on time to their foster home last Saturday were seen crossing into Mexico with their non-custodial mother as early as Sunday evening, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Salt Lake City. The children are Ubaldo Guerrero-Lopez Jr., 9, Mirella Guerrero-Lopez, 7, and Esmerelda Guerrero-Lopez, 5.

Bertha Sabala Guerrero picked up the children at 3 p.m. Friday, but failed to return them on Saturday. Police said the 35-year-old has a history of drug abuse and child abandonment.

An Amber Alert was issued Sunday morning. The FBI says Guerrero and the children were seen in the same gray, four-door Pontiac 6000 with Nevada plates that they were believed to have left Idaho in.

The investigation continues. An arrest warrant was issued in Idaho that allows for nationwide extradition of Guerrero. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Caldwell Police Department, 454-7531

DETAILS: Authorities believe the non custodial mother drove to Nevada, where she is believed to live, instead of returning her children to foster care. Bertha Alicia Guerrero Castro was only allowed 24 hours with her children.

Before that 24-hour period was up, she was stopped in Tonopha, Nevada for speeding. The AMBER Alert had not been issued at that time.

“The feeling is that she is still in Las Vegas, which is why we have continued that activation, the AMBER Alert into a second day,” said Bill Fisher with the Nevada Broadcasters Association.

Over radio and on television, an alert goes out about missing children. On Sunday, televisions and road signs in Las Vegas began showing it after Idaho authorities asked for help.

Authorities say Bertha Alicia Guerrero-Castro lives in Las Vegas and drove to Idaho to see her children.

Idaho police say Guerrero Castro has addiction problems and has abandoned her kids in the past. Police believe 5-year-old Esmerelda, 7-year-old Mirella and 9-year-old Ubaldo are in danger.

That’s one of four circumstances that must be met in order to issue an AMBER Alert.

“[The child] has to be 18 and under and there has to be an abduction,” Fisher explained. “Finally, we’ve got to have enough information to put out there.”

And as this AMBER Alert continues into a second day, authorities are hopeful the right person is watching.

The FBI is now involved in the hunt. It is also believed Guerrero-Casto and the children could be in Phoenix, or possibly Mexico.

More information about the children, including the clothes they were wearing when last seen, is posted on Nevada’s Amber Alert website.

Anyone with information about Guerrero-Lopez is urged to call 911, Crime Stoppers at 702-385-5555, or Idaho police at 208-454-7531.
